Centre Manche 2 development off the Normandy coast moves into the permitting phase as TotalEnergies seeks approval for what would become one of France's largest offshore wind farms.

TotalEnergies has submitted an application for the Single Authorisation required to develop its 1.5GW Centre Manche 2 offshore wind project in French waters off Normandy.

According to a company announcement distributed via Business Wire, the application marks a key step in the project's development and follows TotalEnergies' selection by the French government to develop the site. The company said the wind farm would be located more than 40 kilometres off the Normandy coast and would generate around 6TWh of electricity annually.

TotalEnergies estimates the project will require an investment of approximately €4.5 billion and could supply renewable electricity equivalent to the consumption of more than one million households.

The company submitted the application through its project company, Centre Manche Energies, to obtain the permits required to construct and operate the offshore wind farm. The authorisation process will now be reviewed by the relevant French authorities before a final decision is made.

France has identified offshore wind as a key component of its long-term energy strategy, with several large-scale projects progressing through development and construction as the country works to expand renewable generation capacity.
