Offshore survey work is set to begin for RWE’s Awel y Môr offshore wind
project following the project’s award of a Contract for Difference in
the UK government’s Allocation Round 7.
According to RWE, the surveys will be carried out across the project’s
78 km² array area and export cable route, supporting further design refinement
ahead of planned offshore construction.
TGS
will undertake geophysical surveys
to map seabed geology and identify features that may affect construction.
Geo will carry out geotechnical investigations using cone penetration testing
and vibrocore sampling techniques.
Awel
y Môr is located off the coast of north Wales.
RWE has said the project could generate power equivalent to 22.5% of Wales’
current annual energy usage.
The next step for the project is to reach a final investment decision.
Onshore construction is currently planned to begin in 2027, with offshore
construction planned to begin in 2029.
Jo Pickard, senior consents manager at RWE, said the additional survey
data would enable the project team to make design refinements and fine-tune
methods for offshore construction.
The survey programme marks the next stage of development for Awel y Môr
as the project progresses toward a final investment decision.
