Swedish authority backs offshore wind at Sjollen
The County Administrative Board of Skåne has reversed its previous position
on the proposed Sjollen
offshore wind project,
backing the development due to a renewed focus on strengthening electricity
supply in southern Sweden.
The change comes in response to the Swedish Energy Agency's proposal to
designate offshore wind areas in Skåne as being of national interest.
The authority said it now supports all of the proposed areas, including
Sjollen in the Öresund strait, despite previously opposing energy development
there on environmental grounds.
County Governor Peter Danielsson said: “The need for a stronger electricity
supply in Skåne has increased. We are therefore making a new assessment
in which we value the energy issue more highly than before.”
Previous investigations suggest a wind farm at Sjollen could generate up
to 1.3TWh of electricity annually.
The Skåne County Administrative Board said Sjollen remains one of
the more commercially viable offshore wind opportunities because of favourable
grid connection prospects and earlier support from the Swedish Armed Forces.
