SSEN Transmission has signed a long-term framework agreement with Sumitomo Electric and Van Oord for the engineering, for the supply and installation HVDC cable projects, including the proposed Shetland 2 subsea electricity link.

The agreement establishes a strategic partnership that aims to support future of HVDC transmission projects and strengthen the electricity network across northern Scotland.

Subject to regulatory approval, the parties expect to award a call-off contract in 2026 covering the manufacture of 525kV cables for the Shetland 2 project.

Production is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2027 at Sumitomo Electric's new submarine cable manufacturing facility at the Port of Nigg in Scotland.

The company is investing more than £350 million in the factory, which is expected to support more than 650 jobs once operational. An additional 670 jobs are expected during the delivery and installation stages of the Shetland 2 link.

Maurits den Broeder, Managing Director Offshore Energy at Van Oord, said:” By combining our complementary expertise, we are well positioned to support the delivery of this critical infrastructure and the efficient transmission of renewable electricity into the wider UK energy system.”
