SSEN Transmission have begun drilling operations for their HVDC project

SSEN Transmission has begun drilling operations at Rattray Head for its Spittal to Peterhead High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) project.

This next stage of construction represents one of the project's most challenging phases, with specialist contractors carrying out Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) to create a vital connection between onshore and offshore infrastructure.

The Rattray Head landfall HDD will extend approximately 1.7 kilometres, making it one of the longest forward-drilled HDD operations for power cables.

Niall Macleod, Project Director for SSEN Transmission's Spittal-to-Peterhead HVDC subsea link, said: “The start of drilling at Rattray Head represents a significant milestone for the project. This technically complex installation will create the essential link between our onshore and offshore infrastructure.”

Work began this month and is expected to continue over the next 12 months. Once completed, it will form a key component of the HVDC subsea cable link, transporting energy generated in Scotland to homes and businesses across the country.
