South Korea backs offshore wind growth with new bidding results

South Korea selected five offshore wind projects totalling 1,786 MW in its first 2026 competitive bidding round, marking a major expansion of the country's renewable energy sector.

Nine projects totalling 3,656 MW submitted bids, creating the first competition ratio above 2:1 since the bidding system began in 2022.

The selected projects include 1,254 MW of fixed-bottom offshore wind and a 532 MW floating offshore wind project, reviving the floating wind market after no projects were awarded last year due to low participation.

The results are expected to strengthen South Korea's offshore wind supply chain by increasing domestic production of key components, including foundations, cables, and installation services.

The government said its emphasis on industrial benefits and supply chain development encouraged greater domestic participation.

Officials will monitor project implementation and release a 10 year offshore wind bidding roadmap to ensure presented plans are carried out.
