Prysmian’s new burial tool has been put into operation
Prysmian has revealed a new burial tool that is used to keep submarine
cables safe beneath the seabed.
The new state-of-the-art burial tool is one of two supplied from SMD’s
base in Northeast England and will be used on power cables buried up to
5 metres below the mean seabed level.
Peter Watson, Middlesbrough Marine Base & Offshore Subsea Assets at
Prysmian, said: “With accuracy, precision and efficiency, the tool enhances
our ability to tackle increasingly challenging seabed conditions and achieve
cable burial depths of up to five metres, depending on seabed characteristics.”
The tool has been developed in partnership between Prysmian and SMD. The
aim is to make the burial process more efficient and cost-effective in
the long term by protecting submarine cables.
The project was created to meet customer needs, as these cables are strategic
assets that transport energy over long distances through interconnectors
and the offshore wind grid.
