OWC and APEM Group have signed MoU to support offshore wind decommissioning
OWC and APEM Group have signed a memorandum of understanding to support
offshore wind decommissioning projects in the UK.
The partnership will combine the companies' expertise in offshore wind
engineering, environmental planning and consultancy services to support
UK clients by delivering integrated technical solutions that help reduce
risk during the planning and execution stages.
“Offshore wind decommissioning is the next and inevitable frontier of
the UK energy transition. As we accelerate deployment, we must also address
how to safely and commercially decommission the UK’s first generation
of assets,” said Cliff Pullen, director of Asset Management and Investment
at OWC.
The partnership comes at a critical time for the UK offshore wind sector,
with an estimated 5 GW of installed capacity expected to reach the end
of its operational life in the coming years, requiring developers to decide
whether to repower or decommission those assets.
Nikki Young, associate director at GoBe Consultants, highlighted the complexity
of the process, stating that decommissioning “requires the same level
of strategic planning, environmental consideration and technical integration
as offshore development.”
The agreement is intended to help developers navigate the technical, environmental
and regulatory challenges associated with offshore wind decommissioning
as the UK's first generation of projects approaches retirement.
