Navantia Seanergies has tested autonomous drone inspections for offshore
wind structures at its Fene yard in Spain.
Representatives from Bureau Veritas, DNV and Lloyd’s Register attended
the demonstration, which included inspection of a jacket structure using
high-magnification imaging technology.
The drone inspection system was developed with the University of Seville’s
Robotics, Vision and Control Research Group under a collaboration with
the Andalusian Association for Research and Industrial Cooperation.
During the trial, inspection footage was streamed live to a control room
at the shipyard. The system used optical zoom of up to 40x and digital
zoom of up to 80x to identify defects on the structure.
Navantia Seanergies said the technology is intended to improve inspection
efficiency and reduce operational risk during work on large offshore structures.
The company also plans to train personnel at the Fene facility as part
of a wider deployment of the system.
