ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) has submitted Section 36 consent applications for the proposed
MachairWind offshore wind project to the Scottish Government's Marine Directorate.

The application covers the project's wind farm development area off Scotland's west coast and marks a key step in the consenting process for one of the country's planned offshore wind developments.

According to project information, the proposed development could comprise between 91 and 144 wind turbines, together with fixed-bottom foundations, inter-array cables, export cables and up to two offshore substations.

The application has been submitted under Section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989, which is required for large-scale electricity generation projects in Scottish waters.

Scottish ministers will then make the final decision on whether to grant consent, based on recommendations from the Marine Directorate following consultation and environmental assessment.

MachairWind said separate applications covering the export cable corridor and onshore infrastructure will be submitted at a later date.

Application documents are expected to be made publicly available in early July, after which a formal consultation period will begin.

A final decision on the project is expected to take around a year following submission of the application.
