News Release Jan De Nul
Jan De Nul
has started construction of a coral reef restoration farm in the Maldives
in partnership with Coral Vita.
The AquaReef project,
located in the South Malé Atoll, is intended to develop a scalable model
for large-scale coral restoration.
The 2,500-square-metre
facility will consist of ten solar-powered containers designed to grow
more than 15,000 corals over 24 months.
Construction is
scheduled for completion by autumn 2026, after which Coral Vita will begin
coral production. The first outplanting is planned for 2027.
Coral fragments
will be sourced from healthy, resilient reefs and grown using micro-fragmentation
techniques in controlled aquaria.
Jan De Nul said
the project supports its wider strategy of integrating nature restoration
with marine infrastructure and coastal protection activities.
