East Yorkshire offshore wind substation approved

Plans for a new electricity substation that will connect offshore wind generation from the North Sea to the UK grid have been approved in East Yorkshire.

The development at Birkhill Wood near Cottingham will support the connection of three offshore wind farms and form part of wider network upgrades aimed at strengthening the UK's electricity system as renewable energy capacity continues to expand.

The National Grid said the 7.4 acre site will be linked to the nearby Creyke Beck substation, which is also set to be expanded to accommodate battery energy storage and additional power from future offshore developments.

According to the company, the infrastructure will help deliver enough electricity to power more than four million homes while improving the resilience of the regional electricity network.

Daniel Cohen, senior project manager at National Grid, said "Strengthening the network is essential to support local businesses, future jobs and the connection of more secure, cleaner, home-grown energy from more affordable sources."

Construction is expected to begin in spring 2027, with the new substation scheduled to enter operation by 2030.
