Curonian Nord offshore wind farm clears environmental assessment

Ignitis Renewables has secured a positive environmental impact assessment (EIA) decision for its proposed Curonian Nord offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea, marking a significant milestone towards it's development.

Lithuania's Environmental Protection Agency concluded the project can proceed, subject to a range of mitigation measures and conditions designed to protect marine ecosystems and biodiversity, while preserving long term environmental interests.

The 700MW wind farm is expected to generate approximately 3TWh of renewable electricity per year, making it Lithuania's largest wind project.

Anne-Marie Roikjær, Project Director for Curonian Nord said: “The positive decision is a significant milestone for the Curonian Nord project. It confirms that, following extensive environmental studies, stakeholder engagement and close cooperation with the responsible authorities.”

The approval provides the environmental basis for the project to move into the remaining development and permitting stages.
Once completed, Curonian Nord will occupy around 120 square kilometres in the Baltic Sea and is expected to play a significant role in expanding Lithuania's offshore wind capacity.
