Construction advances on world's first artificial energy island

The project, located around 45 kilometres off the Belgian coast, is being developed by transmission system operator Elia and is expected to become the world's first artificial energy island designed specifically to support offshore wind integration.


According to an update from Elia, favourable weather conditions have allowed offshore construction works to continue steadily, bringing the project closer to completion.


The island is being built by TM Edison, a joint venture between DEME and Jan De Nul. Once completed, it will serve as a hub connecting offshore wind farms in
Belgium's Princess Elisabeth Zone to the mainland electricity grid.

The project is expected to play a key role in integrating up to 3.5GW of future offshore wind capacity while also supporting the development of a more interconnected North Sea energy system.


The Princess Elisabeth Energy Island is viewed as a flagship project for offshore grid development in Europe, with policymakers and transmission operators closely watching its progress as countries seek new ways to connect growing volumes of offshore wind generation.
