China's 16MW floating wind platform heads offshore

The world's first tension-leg floating offshore wind platform, has now departed from Zhuhai following its assembly completion. The platform is then to travel to Lufeng oilfield cluster in the South China Sea.


This project is designed to support a single 16MW wind turbine, it aims to provide renewable electricity directly to offshore oil and gas operations through subsea cables.


The structure will sit at 307 metres high and weighing almost 8,000 tonnes, the platform is expected to be the largest of its type by single-turbine capacity.

Once operational, it is expected to generate around 54 million kWh of electricity annually, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 35,000 tonnes each year.


The project combines floating offshore wind with offshore oil and gas infrastructure, demonstrating how renewable energy can be used to help decarbonise offshore hydrocarbon production while supporting the wider deployment of floating wind technology.


The development also marks another milestone for
China's floating offshore wind sector, which is increasingly focusing on larger turbine platforms and the integration of renewable energy into offshore industrial operations.
