Australia backs renewable expansion as offshore wind activity grows

Australia has selected 20 renewable energy and battery storage projects under the latest round of its Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS), backing more than 6.6GW of new clean energy capacity across the National Electricity Market.

The projects were awarded through CIS Tender 4, managed by AEMO Services on behalf of the Australian Government, with the successful portfolio including
large-scale wind, solar and battery energy storage developments across several Australian states.

The latest awards form part of Australia’s broader energy transition strategy, which includes the development of offshore wind zones in regions such as Gippsland and the Hunter. Offshore site investigation, metocean and
floating LiDAR campaigns have continued to expand as developers progress early-stage offshore wind assessment work.

The Capacity Investment Scheme is designed to provide developers with long-term revenue certainty, helping projects secure financing and progress towards construction as Australia works to replace ageing coal-fired generation and strengthen grid reliability.

Australia is targeting 32GW of new renewable generation and storage capacity through the CIS programme by 2030 as it accelerates investment in low-carbon energy infrastructure..
