ABS has issued a product design assessment to Encomara for its Squid system, a mooring and cable protection technology designed for floating offshore wind turbines. The certification marks a further step in validating the system for use in offshore wind projects.

The assessment follows an earlier approval and reflects a more detailed technical review against class and industry standards for floating wind. The system is intended to improve the safety and efficiency of installation and operations for floating offshore turbines.

The Squid system is adapted from the disconnectable turret buoy concept used in offshore oil and gas. It is designed to protect moorings and inter-array cables during installation and when turbines are disconnected from station, using established offshore procedures.

Encomara plans to carry out more inshore wet tests at Ardersier as it moves closer to commercial deployment. The system’s disconnectable design is also intended to support maintenance and repairs, helping to reduce operational risk in floating offshore wind projects.
