Prysmian has completed its work at RWE’s Sofia offshore wind farm. The Italian cable manufacturer was contracted in 2021 to handle the design, manufacturing and installation of the project’s cable systems.

Since then, Prysmian has installed more than 450 km of high-voltage cables using their deep sea cable laying vessel Leonardo da Vinci.

The project is one of the largest of its kind, covering an area larger than the Isle of Man. It is expected to provide a significant boost to renewable energy supply in the region.

Located on Dogger Bank in the North Sea, the site will feature 100 turbines in water depths of up to 35 metres. The wind farm will have the capacity of 1.4 GW, enough to power about 1.2 million homes once fully operational.

“This project, which has been delivered flawlessly, will now power millions of homes and proves that offshore wind can be delivered quickly,” said Alessandro Panico, chief commercial officer for transmission at Prysmian.
